[Background information:

Edward was born in 1888 to Dante and Theophratus van Hohenheim, a noble wizarding family from England.

Most of his early childhood was spent with his Nanny Trisha Elric, who he, due to his remarkable memory of his first years of life, would later consider his own mother. She nursed him and educated him until his 4th year of life; in august 7th, 1892, she died in a difficult child labor. Edward's father adopted the newly orphaned child (who had no other family) as his own, and he was named Alphonse; only later, on his teenager years, did Edward find out the true reason was that Alphonse was indeed his half brother. As Edward considered Trisha his mother, he had no qualms accepting Al as his brother, and formed with him a strong bond rarely any other siblings shared.

With the death of Trisha, an older, more stern woman took her place, and due to her beliefs of how children should be properly brought up, Edward started having more contact with his parents. Hohenheim liked Edward, and would often praise his inteligence and indulge his thirsty for knowledge, but it was Alphonse who took the greater share of his love and attention. Dante had no attatchment to Edward and despised Alphonse; since both were almost glued at the hips most of the time, she showed her hate towards both.

When Edward reached the age 9 and Alphonse was 5, their only sister Layla was born. Because he was nearly a school-age child at the time, Edward didn't have many chances to grow attatched to his sister; Al and Lay grew close together in the absence of their brother, and Layla learned to love and admire Edward due to Alphonse's own feelings. Due to this new distance between he and his siblings, and the rage his Slytherin mother threw upon him at the knews he had been accepted in Gryffindor, Edward slowly grew apart from his family.

He grew into a reclused teenager and mostly dedicated himself to his potions and seeking knowledge on the fields of magic that caught his interest. By age 15, he was already taking extra courses on potions with the Hogwarts graduates and knew many bits and tibits about many other fields of magic, along with a bit of muggle knowledge his fellow pureblood wizards didn't share.

William (Envy), his youngest brother, was born by the time he was at Hogwarts and was extremely sheltered by his mother, at the time inconsolable that her first born had been sorted into Gryffindor. He was almost completery separated from his older siblings, and seemed to harbor a slowly growing feeling of dislike towards them, as well as hate towards their father. During Edward's years at Hogwarts, Hohenheim was distant as ever; being a scholar himself, he was away researching alchemy on other countries most of the time, and sometimes his rare visits would only coincide with Edward's own vacations. Al and Lay were the only to notice the enemity William was developing towards their family as Dante poisoned him against them.

By the time Edward was 16, a incident once more made he and Al, and also Layla, form a closer bond. William attempted to kill Alphonse during their summer vacations and nearly succeeded. Hohenheim, after hearing the whole story and coming to the conclusion Dante had set his youngest son against his family, he moved most of his political power against her and cast her out of his house. He tried to clear William's mind from what lies his mother had weaved, but as he grew older his hate for them only grew, and the next year he ran away after his mother. Hohenheim didn't try to bring him back, instead placed most of his power on his newly graduated son and left indefinitely the country to research.

Edward took his responsability for the upbringing of his siblings and as the master of their house at age 17, and although he did his best he was mostly an absentminded scholar. He worried about his siblings, but also worried about his studies, and his interaction with people, mainly his noble peers, slowly grew to mirror a mix of his mother and father.]

[Background information:

Edward Elric was born to a wizard and a non-wizard(muggle), and very early on his life his father left him, his mother and his younger brother, being raised by his mother alone, as she didn't have any near relatives. His father was a powerful wizard and held in his home many interesting books, all of which Edward read and tried to understand in his childhood. He took a special interest on the potions books (Which I believe is nearest to Alchemy in HP's world, in which you "deconstruct" the materials to find their proprieties to later on put them to use to form new, useful potions), and his passion for the subject grew up with him.

When he was 9 his mother died of a misterious discease, and the fact that she seemed worse because she missed their father made an anger and biterness against him grow in his chest. He used his studies and potions to vent most of the sadness and bitter feelings, dedicating himself to look after his younger brother to make sure he didn't suffer as much as he saw his mother suffer.

He and his younger brother Alphonse went together to a wizarding orphanage and spent there one year and half before he got his letter to Hogwarts. He was very against going to the school at first, afraid of leaving his brother alone and of losing him, but he was convinced by his own brother to attend, and he welcomed Alphonse with relief when he received his letter two years later.

After he graduated Hogwarts, he stayed as the Potion's Professor assistant/apprentice because he was interested on continuing his studies but mostly because he did not want to leave Al behind once more.

Edward is a very talented wizard, studious and very stubborn when he sets his mind to something. He is intelligent and smart, but sometimes lets his temper get the best of him and ends up in trouble with others or even on his classes. Alphonse is the only one who can reason him out of doing something stupid when he is being stubborn, but Izumi can as easily scare him out of doing said thing. (or scare him into studying trasfiguration.)]
